Use these as working definitions. Vendors use overlapping labels; a category name alone does not establish the design or functionality of a particular platform.
FP&A — Financial Planning & Analysis
The finance function and processes for planning, budgeting, forecasting, analysis and decision support. FP&A software is a supporting category of tools.
Integrated Planning
Connecting operational assumptions, models and financial outcomes across functions. The scope and level of integration depend on the decision.
Integrated Financial Planning
A connected model of the P&L, balance sheet and cash flow. It makes profit, capital and cash consequences consistent.
CPM / EPM
Corporate / Enterprise Performance Management are overlapping umbrella categories. Product portfolios can include planning, performance analysis, reporting and consolidation.
Driver-Based Planning
Planning with explicit causal or predictive relationships between business inputs and outcomes, rather than line-item extrapolation alone.
xP&A — Extended Planning & Analysis
Applying planning and analysis across operational functions such as sales, workforce and supply chain, connected with finance.
IBP — Integrated Business Planning
An adjacent concept often rooted in demand, supply and operations planning. Its relationship to financial planning must be defined for the organization.
Three-statement planning
Linking the income statement, balance sheet and cash-flow statement. Use it when the decision needs capital and cash consequences, rather than at every input level.
Requirements before the shortlist
Editorial frameworkWrite the decision, time horizon, users, model boundaries and required outputs before listing features. Then document drivers, data sources, ownership, scenario behavior and controls.
A requirement should be testable: “Show how changing payment terms affects the balance sheet and cash forecast” is more useful than “supports integrated planning.”
