INDEPENDENT RESEARCH GUIDERESEARCH EDITION 01 · OCTOBER 2026

Use cases

Planning situations before platform features.

Nine FP&A and integrated planning use cases framed as problem, logic, capability and validation questions.

Research reviewed 11 October 2026Independent editorial guideEvidence & open questions

Start with a decision situation

Each use case moves from the business problem to planning logic, capability requirements and questions to validate. These are editorial evaluation frameworks, not vendor-specific feature claims.

Multi-Year Financial Planning

Problem

A P&L plan leaves investment, funding and cash consequences unclear.

Planning logic

Connect operating assumptions, opening balances, capex, working capital and financing.

Technology capability to validate

Integrated financial models, schedules and controlled scenarios.

Questions to validate

Can a driver change be traced through P&L, balance sheet and cash flow? What horizon and granularity are needed?

Scenario Planning

Problem

Management needs a fast and explainable answer to “what if?”.

Planning logic

Separate scenario assumptions from formulas and document dependent changes.

Technology capability to validate

Scenario versions, sensitivities and comparison views.

Questions to validate

Which assumptions change together? Are constraints and reconciliation preserved?

Rolling Forecasting

Problem

Annual assumptions become stale while the business keeps moving.

Planning logic

Combine actuals with updated drivers and a clearly defined rolling horizon.

Technology capability to validate

Data refresh, version control and contributor workflows.

Questions to validate

How are closed periods protected? Who updates the assumptions and signs off the forecast?

Manufacturing Volume / Mix Planning

Problem

Operational changes do not translate transparently into margin and cash.

Planning logic

Relate volume, mix, price, product cost, capacity and working capital.

Technology capability to validate

Dimensional driver models and suitable operational data handoffs.

Questions to validate

Which cost concept and aggregation matter? Where should detailed Product Costing remain?

Capex & Investment Planning

Problem

Investment choices sit apart from the management plan.

Planning logic

Link purchase and commissioning dates to capacity, depreciation, cash and funding.

Technology capability to validate

Capex schedules, linked statements and scenario calculations.

Questions to validate

Do the timing, useful lives and financing assumptions reconcile with the financial plan?

Decentralized Planning

Problem

Distributed submissions produce inconsistent assumptions and versions.

Planning logic

Agree common dimensions, accountable owners, deadlines and release rules.

Technology capability to validate

Permissions, workflow, approvals and a governed shared model.

Questions to validate

Who owns shared drivers? How are local exceptions and late changes controlled?

Excel Modernization

Problem

The process works but increasingly depends on manual consolidation and a few people.

Planning logic

Retain useful logic while clarifying authoritative data, calculations and controls.

Technology capability to validate

Import/export or Excel coexistence, shared models and traceability.

Questions to validate

Which risks are observed? Is keeping Excel, a hybrid or migration the proportionate response?

Interim-CFO Planning Situations

Problem

A mandate needs focused model or scenario work under time pressure.

Planning logic

Select the critical decision, minimum useful scope and accountable handoff.

Technology capability to validate

Flexible scenario models, explainable outputs and reconciliation.

Questions to validate

What must be decision-ready first? Which assumptions and data gaps can management accept?

Software Selection / Readiness

Problem

The shortlist is driven by features before the business has clear requirements.

Planning logic

Define use cases, drivers, sources, users, governance and outputs.

Technology capability to validate

Capabilities demonstrated against agreed requirements.

Questions to validate

What must stay outside the platform? Which claims are documented, inferred or still unverified?

Planning with SAP Data vs Planning in SAP

Editorial evaluation framework

A SAP connection can serve several different responsibilities. Define which ones the proposed process actually needs before deciding whether a planning tool replaces or complements another.

A requirements framework, not a ranking or a statement that every vendor supports every step.
ResponsibilityWhat to demonstrate
Read SAP dataThe actual and master-data objects, dimensions, period coverage and refresh process.
Calculate an external planThe authoritative drivers, formulas, scenario identity and financial roll-forward outside SAP.
Write released plans into SAPThe supported target objects, values / quantities, units, versions and overwrite / delta behavior.
Complete the SAP processRequired rate calculation, cost valuation, allocations, error handling and reconciliation after the transfer.

Evidence examples: a historical Corporate Planner customer case describes sales-plan quantities returned to SAP; Lucanet documents internal xP&A / CFP exchange and SAP source import; Loyos lists SAP-related interfaces without object-level writeback detail; Allevo manuals describe SAP planning methods and separate manufacturing-cost valuation steps. Their scope and release limits belong in the validation. [source] [source] [source] [source] [source] [source]

For industrial multi-year planning, test all required years and relevant objects. A cost-center budget does not by itself establish activity-quantity, capacity or rate planning. A successful upload does not by itself establish correct cost valuation.

Define the requirements in a bounded Sprint

Turn the situation into an agreed workstream

Define the scope, required inputs, assumptions, output and acceptance criteria before choosing a tool or starting configuration. A bounded requirements or QA workstream can support a vendor, consultancy or interim finance leader.
