Understand FP&A software before building a shortlist

Explore FP&A, CPM / EPM and integrated planning software through the business questions it needs to answer. Category labels overlap; a documented capability still needs validation against your models, data and process.

Start with the planning decision, model boundaries, contributor process and required controls. These profiles provide context for a requirements discussion; they do not prescribe a shortlist.

Editorial selection framework

Business need → Planning requirement → Capability → Evidence → Open question → Solution fit

Archetypes overlap. Scope, integration and implementation effort must be validated against the actual business architecture.

AI is a product layer to validate

Planning vendors increasingly describe assistance with modeling, forecasts, commentary, scenarios or analysis. A product claim should be checked for the exact module, release, data permissions and human approval requirements.

Ask for attributable evidence before accepting forecast-quality or productivity claims. Autonomous assumption changes and end-to-end planning decisions need especially careful validation.

Technical AI-agent implementation, workflow automation and cross-system AI delivery belong to PMO24. This guide’s role is research into planning products and requirements.
